India accounts for 12% of foreign students in US for year 2012 – 13, drops 3.5%

The Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange has released the 2013 data for the the number of international students at colleges and universities in the United States. Indian students account to 12% of the international student population. Compared to 2011 – 12 period, there is a drop of 3.5% in 2012-13. 100,270 students went to US for studies in 2011, which reduced to 96,754 in 2012.

35.6% of the students from India opted for Engineering studies followed by 23.1 for Math/ Computer Science, 13.7% for Business/ Management and 11.2% for Physical/ Life Sciences.

 

India received 5.7% more US students studied in India than in the prior year. in 2011, 4345 students came from US to India and in 2012, the number increased to 4593.

The number of international students enrolled in U.S. higher education increased by seven percent to 819,644 students in 2012/13, with 55,000 more students than last year enrolled in colleges and universities across the United States. Despite the increases in recent years, international students still constitute less than four percent of the more than 21 million students enrolled in U.S. higher education.
